Why not take time to explore this beautiful city while you’re here for the EACR 2025 Congress in June, celebrated as a fantastic time of the year to visit due to the sunny weather and liveliness without the heavier crowds of late summer.
We asked local EACR Ambassadors for their advice on what to do while you’re in town, and we’d like to thank Catarina Tavares Cavaleiro and Sofia Ramos for sharing their local knowledge and insights into what makes Lisbon a great place to visit.
Read on for a taste of what Lisbon has to offer…
Lisbon is the home town of Keynote Speaker, Carlos Caldas: "If you want to have an experience that is unique to Lisbon, take one of the historic yellow trams. Those go through the historic part of Lisbon up to the Roman areas, to the castle and to the oldest part of the city." Carlos also recommends walking along the beautiful riverfront and taking advantage of what the Romans called the "little Mediterranean".
Taking place throughout June, with the main celebrations on 12 and 13 June, why not travel to Lisbon a few days earlier than the Congress to enjoy it? The festival is a vibrant celebration featuring colourful street decorations, music, dancing, and traditional grilled sardines, particularly in the historic neighborhood of Alfama.
EACR member Catarina Tavares Cavaleiro highly recommends visiting Terreiro do Paço (Praça do Comércio), one of Lisbon’s most famous squares by the river. From there, take a walk through the Baixa district to the Sé Cathedral, a beautiful landmark full of history. Then, head uphill to Castelo de São Jorge for not only a glimpse into Lisbon's history with its stunning castle but also breathtaking views of the city from its iconic viewpoints.
A visit to Belém is also a must. It is easily accessible by train or the scenic tram from Rossio Square. While in the area, you can walk around the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém, both offering stunning views of the Tejo River.
For a modern and cosmopolitan experience, head to Parque das Nações, where you’ll find lush gardens, riverside paths along the Tejo, and the Oceanário de Lisboa. This world-renowned aquarium, one of the largest in the world, plays a crucial role in marine conservation and offers a unique opportunity to explore underwater ecosystems.
"Though Lisbon is not a large city, it’s cozy, vibrant, and has an unique light," says local EACR member, Sofia Ramos.
Our members have plenty of recommendations on where to eat while you're in Lisbon! "For lunch near Belém, Linha 27 is a very typical restaurant that offers very good Portuguese food. If you prefer a dining experience, Taberna da Esperança is an excellent choice. This charming tasca serves traditional Portuguese dishes with a modern twist in a warm and inviting atmosphere."
"While in Belém, be sure to indulge in the famous Pastéis de Belém, a traditional and delicious cake that’s an absolute must-try."
"For a true taste of Portuguese culture, Alfama is the place to be. Here, you’ll find several restaurants and taverns serving roasted sardines, a summer staple in Portugal."
Lisbon’s architectural charm is unmatched. Wander through the narrow streets and admire the picturesque houses in its traditional neighborhoods. Don't miss the opportunity to visit some of the city's most remarkable monuments near the Tejo River, such as the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower, and the National Coach Museum – each telling a story of Portugal’s rich history.
